Uganda derives
its name from the ancient kingdom of Buganda. Uganda’s British colonialists merged 56 ethnic communities across 5 regions to form
current Uganda. Each of the ethnic communities is defined by its unique
cultures, norms and traditions which they are willing to share with visitors
during our cultural tours. Apart from the cultural encounters, travelers can
also engage in community experiences. Both community and cultural tours offer
you the chance to experience the unique and authentic side of Uganda. It
is a win-win because your tourism dollar remains local to support local
livelihoods. This contributes to conservation as they become protective of the
nature they benefit from. Our two major cultural and community experiences are
described below.
The Batwa cultural experience
Step back in time to see how the Batwa lived for millennia in the
Bwindi, one of the most beautiful jungles on earth and home of the famous
mountain gorillas. Enjoy an incredible day hike in the rain forest with Batwa
guides, see how the Batwa lived and hunted, learn about medicinal plants, and
watch for animals and birds. You will hear ancient legends and traditional
songs, watch energetic dances, and join in on a mock hunting party. You can
even test your skill with a Batwa bow and arrow.
Village/community walks
Take a walk to learn about the life of the host communities. Visit various sites like tea plantations, coffee plantations, waterfalls, distillation sites of local gin, banana-beer brewing demonstration site, and traditional healers, bird-watching in a community, local food preparation, music and performance. You have an opportunity to directly interact with the locals. Community walks last up to three hours depending on the sights and activities. However, visitors are free to choose the sites of particular interest and opt for a shorter itinerary.
